Guide To Clamp Earth Resistance Tester -- Common Faults And Usage Precautions

Release Date:2026-02-03 09:15:41

Popularity:39

Clamp Earth Resistance Tester are widely used in substations, tower base stations, construction sites, urban streets, and even remote mountainous areas, facing complex environments such as extreme heat, sun exposure, wind and rain erosion, and dust pollution. In such all-weather, high-intensity outdoor usage scenarios, if the instrument is not properly protected and operated according to specifications, it is highly susceptible to performance degradation or even damage due to environmental erosion or human negligence—a rough impact can cause jaw deformation, a sudden rain shower may lead to circuit shorting, and long-term neglect of dust cleaning can cause "accumulated damage" to precision components.

Firstly, the general structure and components of different models of Clamp Earth Resistance Tester are similar. The ETCR EM2000 Clamp Earth Resistance Tester is used as an example here.

1. Clamp Head And Housing

The clamp head, as the core measurement component of the Clamp-On Ground Resistance Tester, has its physical condition and cleanliness directly affecting the measurement accuracy and functional reliability of the instrument. If the contact surfaces of the clamp head accumulate dust, oil, or oxides, an insulating layer forms, blocking current induction signal transmission. This manifests as measurement value drift, poor repeatability, or abnormal display (e.g., showing "Er" error, or values jumping upon startup). In this case, use a dry, soft, lint-free cloth, such as a glasses cleaning cloth, to wipe the four contact surfaces of the clamp head while the instrument is powered off, until they are dry and clean. The clamp head must never come into contact with water, alcohol, or other liquids; therefore, do not use wet cloths or alcohol wipes for cleaning.

After cleaning, restart the instrument. If it displays "OL" and accurately measures a 1Ω resistance ring accessory when clamped, it indicates the instrument has returned to normal working condition. If errors persist after repeated cleaning, the instrument needs to be returned to the factory for repair. This procedure can be used at any time to verify if the instrument's measurement function is normal.

If scratches, dents, or deformation occur due to external forces such as impacts or drops, the integrity of the magnetic circuit for clamp closure is compromised, leading to significant measurement deviations. This issue cannot be resolved by the user and requires factory repair.

The clamp head and housing are assembled via components like positioning blocks and screw posts. If any of these parts are damaged, causing the clamp head to fail to close or become misaligned, factory repair is also needed.

2. Buttons And Main Housing

The buttons themselves are made of durable silicone material. Waterproofing should be ensured during use. The main housing is made of wear-resistant plastic. Minor scratches and impacts do not affect its normal measurement function. If housing replacement is necessary, please return the instrument to the factory.

3. LCD Display

The Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) is a 4-digit LCD screen protected by a transparent panel to ensure normal use. If the LCD screen brightness is low, check the battery level indicator in the upper right corner and replace the batteries promptly. If the LCD screen shows white screen aging, no display, or incomplete characters, it may be due to poor internal ribbon cable contact or screen aging/damage, requiring factory repair.

4. Battery Compartment

The primary function of the battery compartment is to house batteries that power the instrument for normal operation, and it is connected to the internal circuit board. If the instrument will not be used for an extended period, please remove the batteries beforehand to prevent battery leakage from corroding the battery contacts and internal circuit board, which could render the instrument inoperable.

5. Summary

During normal instrument use, protect the clamp head from impacts or damage. If the instrument will be stored unused for a long period, remove the batteries. Paying attention to these two points will significantly increase the instrument's service life. For any questions, please feel free to call Technical Support — 13822256710 — Engineer Ou.
